Services Separation

Calculation and design

Droplet separators are designed at Rhodius using the company’s own Separate design software. This program was developed in the mid-‘90s, and has been constantly re-engineered. The version currently in use is 2.1.

This program makes it easy to cater to individual customer requirements, and design the relevant demisters. Customer-specific data must be entered for this.

  • Process pressure
  • Process temperature
  • Gas-phase properties
  • Liquid properties
  • Flow rate

Rhodius specifications such as the following are also entered

  • Material
  • Wire diameter
  • Separation height
  • Mesh density

This data is used to determine the degree of separation, pressure loss, and a concentration profile. The customer then decides whether the calculated values are optimum for the process, or whether the separator properties need to be improved.

Test Lab and Technical Centre

870KF plus Karl-Fischer-Titrator

RHODIUS has a measuring laboratory and test laboratory, where it conducts analyses of automotive applications, as well as technical knitted wire meshes and separation technology.

A wide range of equipment enables the KMS team to analyse mixtures both directly during the process and at the on-site technical centre. Measurements and analyses serve as the basis for selecting the perfect separation solution for your needs!

CFD flow simulation

Flow simulation via SOLIDWORKS

Flow simulation via SOLIDWORKS

This software is based on the principles of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and is the perfect tool for individually analysing all kinds of fluid flows. Using models of the 3D flow environment, a wide range of process conditions can be reproduced and simulated during the development phase.

Examinations of complex flows highlight the necessary geometric changes required for the design. Inefficient flow areas resulting in a high degree of pressure loss, can, for example, be identified and optimised, which ultimately also reduces operating costs.

Generating important findings in separation technology

To ensure a mesh separator works correctly during liquid-liquid separation and when separating aerosol droplets from a gas flow, it is important to uphold an optimum operating speed. If this is not reached, e.g. in gas-liquid applications, the separating effectiveness drops noticeably, whereas if it is exceeded, there is a heightened risk of droplet entrainment and thus system flooding. In order to identify local speed extremes using the separator cross-section, the flow simulation provides both visual and quantitative results.
